About the College

The Australian and New Zealand College of Notaries is a trans Tasman organisation of notaries committed to promoting the highest standards of notarial practice through excellence in education, professional development and support for its members.

The College is not a roof body for Australasian notaries. It is an independent learned society which aims to operate in tandem with and complement the activities of the eight societies of notaries in Australia and New Zealand; and by so doing, to establish and maintain common standards for notarial education and practice.

Full membership is open to all practising Australian and New Zealand notaries.

Any notary holding office in any place outside Australia and New Zealand, who is not qualified to be a member, may be admitted as an associate of the College.

The College's principal objects are:

  • to advance knowledge of and the pursuit of excellence in notarial law and practice;
  • to promote and where considered necessary or appropriate, to provide education and training for practising notaries and for lawyers who seek appointment to the office of notary;
  • to promote, communicate and disseminate within the community a wider knowledge and understanding of the law relating to notarial practice and a wider awareness of the office of notary; and
  • to institute and conduct discussions, lectures, seminars, symposia and conferences relating to notarial practice and theory and related areas of law for the benefit of its members, the notariat generally, government, the diplomatic and consular services, the legal profession, specific interest groups and the public at large.
